Roughly fifty vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.
Police say they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish fluid.
The liquid had been placed in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.
Police then found numerous other vandalized vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement say preliminary tests indicate the substance was probably human blood.
"There is still no lead as to its origin; officials are not yet cognizant of any injuries in connection with the incident," they added.
Municipal representatives stated they were working "to solve the incident" and have appealed to the residents for details.
A senior official said the incident rendered him speechless and needed to be solved quickly.
"This act affects the core of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, referring to the murder of nine victims by a shooter aiming at people of immigrant origin in 2020.
