Users Coming Off Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that patients who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users using such drugs must be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled an individual.

The struggle is compounded if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
