Conservative reactions to the partial release of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Administration Defends Censorship with Strong Rhetoric
Administration representatives defended the heavily censored sections with intense exaggerated language. “At no point in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so open with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter describing the censorship process.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's name and likeness are visible in some of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt serious questions about what may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded greater openness.
“The public are furious and walking away,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this file dump egregiously does not comply with both the intent and the letter of the act,” he added.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Release
However, some rightwing commentators and former President allies swung firmly in support of the administration.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
But a few are not, including high-profile individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed certain conservative voices to launch the attack.
“It’s pretty rich how the political left wrongly claimed Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of no criminal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been concealing those files for an extended period only to release them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photographs as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response added.
Overall Rightwing Comment Remains Muted
Nonetheless, broader discourse on the right was relatively muted following the release, especially when compared with the vociferous demands for action that came before the congressional vote to enact a law requiring the documents' release.
The commentator, who recently secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest advocates for a complete release. In February, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative influencers were provided hard-copy folders of materials that included no new data.
