The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The ex-president was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in September and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending appeals.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.
This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.
Court Filing Details Flight Fears
In a paperwork permitting the custody, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.
This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his child.
His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your sofa? I urge you to fight with us."
He said the vigil would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our country."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the magistrate's ruling was the potential of his move to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of planning to ask for protection through a embassy office", a declaration said.
The court filing highlights that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative American leader Trump, leading him to impose a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.
He is being detained in a Federal Police station in the capital and will undergo a detention review on the following day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he demanded ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other ailments.
Background on Conviction
The former president was found guilty of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.
The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without issue on January 1st, 2023.
But a following week, on 8 January, many his followers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.
The magistrates found that the rioters had been incited by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and reinstate his authority.
At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The former president called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 national vote.
