European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
